Here is a proposition of “Modelling” and “Interaction in 3D/Manipulation” parts refactoring.

Warning
This is a work in progress proposition. Currently, only the “interaction in 3D/manipulation” part is “definitive”. For modeling chapter, The “object” part is also quite finished, as well as the “meshes” one. The other parts have not been addressed yet – and there is some work, at least for curves and surfaces…

I started this when mindrones suggested me to regroup, in the mesh part of Modelling, selection pages and editing pages. As usual, one after the other, I was lead to refactor all the Modelling chapter, and a sub-part of the Interaction in 3D one. The main work was cut/paste/merge/write page content, as there was many things that were said twice or more, many things that were in places they didn’t belong to at all, and many things lacking (especially in mesh editing…).

Even though I tried to update and complete all these topics, my main goal here was reorganization and cleaning – so I know not every detail is covered yet (and perhaps it even lacks major things – but I don’t think so!), but I hope and believe we now have a quite better structure and cleaner pages than before… most useful when starting 2.5 doc!

About Illustration
I know the texts I wrote lack illustrations, but I didn’t address this problem right now for two reasons:
  • I have not enough time to do real good, self-explanatory screen captures (it’s a huge work!).
  • I don’t want to create doubles with already uploaded images (and as I’m not often online, it’s difficult to me to check these ones…).

So I’ll see what I can do about this later, in a “second pass” (along with proofreading!), and after I get a consensus on the work already done

Let me know what you think about all this.

Here are the detailed descriptions of what I modified, along with the new Interaction in 3D and Modelling TOC:

Note: Perhaps we should move the “Data System” part before the “Interaction in 3D” one?

“Interaction in 3D/Manipulation”

  • Introduction: Slightly updated…
    • removed the literal in links, it's difficult to understand they are links --mindrones 19:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
      • committed in the manual! --mindrones 18:49, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Renamed “Manipulation/Hotkeys” to “Manipulation/Basics” (as it describes everything about grab/scale/rotate, and not only their hotkeys!), and slightly updated it.
    • agree on name change
    • added the newer proportional edit parts from Manual in GRS
    • change a bit the order of options
    • added snap popup image
    • minor tweaking --mindrones 19:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
      • committed in the manual! --mindrones 18:49, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Manipulators: Moved parts about transform orientation in relevant page!
    • reorganized
    • edited the the description
    • put manipulator types into description
    • reformatted images table
    • manipulators is a list now --mindrones 19:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
      • committed in the manual! --mindrones 23:25, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Gestures: Small updates…
      • committed in the manual! --mindrones 12:17, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Axis Locking: Merged both the original page and some content from old Object editing page, trying to both update and rationalize the page, to get a complete doc…
    • on hold, I think the original one is better, have to work/think on this --mindrones 12:17, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
    • Mindrones, I think the new version is both more complete (e.g. mouse axis locking), and less verbose… That said, I’ll let you decide! --Mont29 12:52, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)
  • Pivot Points: Untouched…
      • committed in the manual (diff was only one note) --mindrones 12:17, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Transform Orientations: Slightly updated it (e.g. with a bit from “manipulators” page), and stripped few things (like axis locking, nothing to do here!).
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)
  • Advanced Transformations: The to sphere, shear, warp and push/pull transformations (as I realized they are not mesh specific!).
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)
  • Moved “Snap to Mesh” from “Modelling” to “3D Interaction/Manipulation”, as it is more a “general-manipulation” feature, than a “mesh-editing” feature (by the way, it might be extended in Edit mode for curve/surface control points too!)…
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)
  • Proportional Edit: Few precisions…
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)
  • Transform Properties: Untouched.
      • committed in the manual! --Mont29 11:51, 10 April 2011 (CEST)

“Modelling”

Note that I put meshes part on the second column alone, to balance better the two sides (but I didn’t modify the order of next/previous links in the pages). Not sure it is a good idea though…

I also removed booleans and subsurface pages, as these are modifiers nowadays – modeling chapter is big enough like that, judicious cross links will do the job, I think!

  • Introduction: Added short talk about Object/ObData datablocks, which are very important concepts to grasp Blender way of work, I think…
  • Objects: Updated a bit the intro, removed some selection/edit stuff that had nothing to do there! Added “visualization” part.
  • Selecting Objects: Slightly updated…
  • Editing Objects: Striped all “standard” edit (i.e. grab/scale/rotate, axis locking, etc.), pointing to the “Interaction in 3D/Manipulation” relevant sub-sections (no need to have duplicated info like that!). Refactoring the “mirror” part (putting here the “object” part of what was in mesh mirror description, “Basic Tools” page…). Some other minor edits/moves, like new “adding object” and “center object” sections…
  • Groups and Parenting: Slightly updated (added a few words about PassIndex, moved group-selection to selection page (which already had it, but out-dated…)).
  • Tracking: Untouched.
  • Duplication: Untouched.

Meshes:

  • Meshes: Removed many shortdesc of editing things (mirror, undo/redo, “specials” menu…) – all this has nothing to do in an intro! I moved what deserved it in relevant editing pages… Added a bit of introduction about meshes, kept/updated undo/redo and visualization parts!
  • Mesh Structures: Slightly updated (e.g. added a word about FGons, about normals…).
  • Mesh Primitives: Untouched…
  • Selecting: Turned this page in a selecting intro, moving everything else in relevant sub-pages, trying to complete undocumented selection features.
  • Editing: Many work to do here too. First, I tried to categorize the editing tools. Then, I moved what already existed into relevant sub-pages. I also moved retopo tool and sculpt mode and multires here, as they are “pure” editing tools – which is not the case for e.g. vertex groups, that document more “general” topics… As usual, this page is just a short intro about editing.
    • Basic Editing: The basics (grab/move/scale/rotate, adding/deleting elements, edge/face creation, and extrusion – the extrusion example goes in its tutorial page, as it is too long for an example!).
    • Vertex Editing: Vertex things (all entries in mesh→vertices menu, the vertex specials and some of the specials menus… When an option is described in more advanced pages – or completely elsewhere – just using cross-links!).
    • Edge Editing: Same as with vertices, but for edges.
    • Face Editing: Same as with vertices, but for faces (and normals).
    • Deforming Tools: The tools that deform a mesh, without modifying its topology (i.e. mirror, shrink/fatten, noise, …).
    • Duplicating Tools: The tools that duplicate (parts of) a mesh (i.e. extrusion, spin, screw…).
    • Subdividing Tools: The tools that subdivide one way or the other a mesh (i.e. subdivide and variants, loop cut, knife and bevel).
    • Miscellaneous Tools: Some tools not modifying the look/shape of a mesh (order of vertices in list, position of object center…).
    • Retopo Tool: Nearly untouched.
    • Sculpt Mode: Untouched.
    • Multi Resolution Mesh: Moved it under “editing”…
  • Vertex Groups: Untouched.
  • Weight Paint: Untouched.
  • Mesh Smoothing: Nearly untouched.

Curves, surfaces (lots of work on both), and text:

  • Curves: Intro, structure and primitive info.
  • Selecting: All selecting doc!
  • Editing: All basic editing stuff (i.e. control points manipulation, adding/removing points and segments, precision, …).
    • Advanced Editing:Advanced stuff, namely curve retopology, curve extrusion (and bevel/taper), and “deform on curve”.

The same goes for surfaces structure…

  • Surfaces: Intro, structure and primitive info.
  • Selecting: All selecting doc (quite simple…).
  • Editing: Everything on surface editing (I hope).

And for text, separate editing (big topic!) from intro/selection…

Metas: Here again, probably no structure change…

  • Metas: Nearly everything important about metas!
  • Editing: The few meta editing topics…
