When I run your original example code I get :
File "Text.002", line 9, in ? KeyError: 'key not in subgroup dict'
referring to the line : mat.properties['SomeRenderer']['TransFac'] = 0.0
It works if I add this line ahead of it:
mat.properties['SomeRenderer']= {}

btw a
dir(mat.properties)
returns nothing
and a
print type(mat.properties)
crashes Blender (CVS 2006-11-29)
