wiki contributor Chris Leggett
- Chris's interest in 3D printing and computer-assisted design began while a medical student at Wake Forest in North Carolina, USA.
- Before starting professional works with Blender, Chris was a molecular animator.
- Chris joined the research group at WFIRM in August of 2013 and used Blender 2.67 to model and 3D-print two heart valves with a special type of material used for bio-engineered body parts.
- Chris Leggett is interested in many aspects of Blender, including animation, development and 3-D printing.
Blender and 3D Printing heart valves
- Chris used Blender to print heart valves. Chris is hopeful bioprinted hearts may be something that is around the corner and is certainly being talked about in the press. Chris elected to use Blender because of its abundant array of functions, python API, and rich user-base.
- Chris is interested in further research and development into 3D printing and incorporates Blender into works. Chris continues to work on 3D printable heart modeling as a research interest and priority.
"It's just exciting to know that you can potentially make a huge impact on one of the most expensive medical problems in the world with this software. Blender offers reliable tools to check printable CAD models for print errors. Complex organs are difficult to model, so I use the print error checker a lot."
3D Animation and Technical Media
- Render and reformat CT and MRI Data (DICOM) for 3D Printing using SLICR or other programs
- Create and convert medical imaging data into portable filetypes for printing and simulations
- Extensive mesh cleaning and 3D models of complex organs.
- Bake and render fluid simulations /physical based simulations for body chip animations.
Additional Works
- 3-D Printing Heart and Valves
- At WFIRM, Christopher generated 3D models that researchers could use to 3D print solid parts for medical research.
- 3-D animations, simulations, and medical illustrations for use in research and animation
3-D Printing Heart and Valves
- At WFIRM, Christopher generated 3D models that researchers could use to 3D print solid parts for medical research.
Blender Areas of Focus and Contribution
- Chris used Blender while at the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine to help prepare prepare models of heart valves printed in this research endeavor with polymer.
- Chris also created several 3D models of the heart using methods used to print the valves.
- Chris created varieties of solids parts for purposes of medical research and continues to maintain a database of Blender-derived files.
