  • Workspaces -They are standalone programs that could be used even if the other workspaces were removed from blender.
    • 3d View - Create 3d bits through 3d mesh/shape editing, sculpting, 3d painting.
    • UV / Image - Create 2d bits (images). Is a simple 2d paint program in and of itself.
    • Node Space (compositor) - Create programs for 2d compositing. There are standalone programs for compositing both still-and-video graphics which Blender soon will compare favorably to even if the rest of blender were removed.
    • Video Sequence Editor - Sequence and blend video and audio clips into a final production. This is an entire category of software, and would be useful by itself even if all other workspaces were removed from blender.
      • Ambiguous / Exceptions:
        • Movie Clip Tracker - This *could* be a standalone program, given support for interchange formats. Perhaps it should be elevated to a workspace.
        • NLA Editor - animation asset packager/mixer. Not useful as a standalone program -- at least not without a 3dview.
        • Text Editor - This is obviously a useful stand-alone program even without other workspaces. However, I don't think it is interesting to elevate the text-editor element of blender to a stand-alone workspace, so I made an exception here.
        • Node Space (material) - The material-node-editor does not feel like a standalone program. Placing it here is a consequence of trying to elevate the compositor to a workspace. However, these two already seem oddly combined, as they don't share any common purpose, merely the common 2d node-editing code. In the future it may make sense to split the material editor into it's own editor-type.
      • Don't fit:
        • Properties - alternate view/control on data mostly in the 3dview and Node(materials). Also edits global render settings. If all other workspaces are removed it does nothing.
        • Timeline - alternate view/control on data in all views. Useless if all other workspaces are removed.
        • Graph Editor - alternate view on animation data. Could theoretically be used as a stand-alone spline editor, but this is a stretch.
        • Dope Sheet - alternate view on animation data. Not a useful standalone program/editor.
        • Outliner - view of dataset element/asset hierarchy. Useless if all other workspaces are removed.
        • File Browser - load/save/link file assets into/out-of the hierarchy. Useless if all other workspaces are removed
        • Game Logic - scripting for 3dview objects. Not a useful standalone program/editor
        • Python Console - Technically the python console is a standalone program, but this isn't relevant to blender
        • Info - This shows command history and allows global function control. Not useful as a standalone program
        • User Preferences -- not a standalone program.
  • Scripting - editors for creating, editing, and running macros, scripts, and structured object logic
        • Game Logic - scripting for 3dview objects. Not a useful standalone program/editor

  • Asset Management (Tools) - browse, manage, load, mix, and process assets for use in workspaces
  • Outliner - view of dataset element/asset hierarchy. (could be a tool)
  • File Browser - load/save/link file assets
  • Movie Clip Tracker - this processes video assets into something usable in 3dview and compositor... (could be a workspace on it's own)
  • Tools - alternate views to control/edit data which is created in workspaces
    • Properties - alternate view/control on data mostly in the 3dview and Node(materials). Also edits global render settings.
    • Timeline - alternate view/control on data in all views.
    • Graph Editor - alternate view on animation data.
