Jamie Le Rossignol

I'm a secondary school teacher with a passion for IT, especially programming, animation, and open source software. Over the last decade I've written IT courses examining Games Programming with C#.NET and Flash, 2D Animation with Flash, 3D Animation with 3DSMax and then Blender. I consider myself a 3D Animation Hobbyist, because I do not work in the 3D Animation or Computer Games Industries.

Impossible Emporium

Background

I stumbled across Blender in 2005, and after an initial play I thought it had a great potential, however, the uniqueness of the User Interface design meant that is was not there yet in terms of an education perspective. So I let it sit in the back of my mind.

I rediscovered it in 2008, when students approached me with a project idea. I told them about the software and provided them with relevant documentation, mainly from the Blender Summer of Documentation. Together they were able to create a basic game framework, but it stopped there with all the students focusing on their studies for years 11 & 12. This was the point where I started to use some of my spare time to try out the tutorials to get a feel for the software with the idea of replacing the 3SD Max-based course with a Blender-based one. I got excited by the 2.5 interface redesign, hopping that it will make it easier to teach to a verity of skill levels.

In 2010, I created some short animations using Blender for the Snow Queen, a musical staged at the Gemco Community Theatre by the Senior Youth. And in 2013 I created a number of animations for the production of Beach Blanket tempest at the Gemco theatre.

Skills

To date I have focused my skill development in the following areas;

  • Animation. Static objects moving in the 3D space, and movement-based character animation. Camera moves, and spot-lights tracking empties.
  • Modelling of vehicles,other hard-surfaced objects, and 3D Printing.
  • Materials & Textures. I tend to avoid too many images in my materials, preferring to find concise node setups.
  • Particle Systems. Snow, Explosions, Smoke, and Fire.
  • Python Programming. This is just really simple stuff, like adding 4000 unique objects, since I don't speak Python yet.
  • Rendering. Mostly the Internal Engine, with a few uses of Cycles the quality is needed.
  • Video Editing. Mainly just combining videos, doing time lapse and a few overlays.
