OpenCL?

Just a thought, have you consider GPU-accerelation (or maybe it's not relevant for this particular project)? A lot of calculation intense areas is starting to adoping this technology (for example numerous render engines being rewritten to support CUDA/OpenCL and Bullet is currently being ported to OpenCL). I guess particle systems could benifit from this too? And it would be great your project will be enough future proof to allow something like this in the future.

Btw if donation would help to boost this project you might want to consider to set up a donation system like other developers have done. I think there are alot of people who would like to see this project succed ;)
