Week 8

This Week

I was traveling over the weekend and Monday so started the SoC work again on Tuesday.

This week mostly consisted of going over design alternatives and discussing them on BA [1]. Some good ideas came up, but at the same time it is clear that it is hard to reach a consensus.

To prevent regressing into an everlasting discussion I've decided to start work on one of the design variations. This consists of i) a conventional top menubar where many non-modal operators are placed, ii) the operator redo panel at the top in the left sidebar, iii) operator properties and special operators (e.g. grease) in panels in the left sidebar, iv) taking operators out of the header and only showing editor properties there. In this system there is a bit more space in the sidebar for custom panels that could be customised by the user for certain activities or personal workflows.

I do not expect this to be the final design, especially because there is still a good ongoing discussion happening, but this way I can get to work and we can get a feel for the interaction of perhaps one or two designs .

Next Week

This weekend I hope to finish the design described above. Next week I expect the discussion on BA will continue and I can try the next design or improve on the current one.

Questions

In the BA thread it came up that there was a feature for custom panels in the early days of 2.5. Does anyone know how this worked technically, visually, and in terms of interaction? Any screenshots anywhere?
