Consideration on Blender Stereoscopic workflow

In order to nicely support stereoscopic workflow in Blender, different areas of the software should be taken into consideration.

Mainly the following areas:

  • 3D viewport (camera view)
  • Image viewer
  • Compositor
  • Render settings

3D viewport

3D viewport is nice for previewing layouts in camera view. Having an off camera 3D viewport is not so useful. In 3D viewport a stereo camera should be properly visualized (pair of virtual cameras, stereo window and it's limits: close plane, zero plane, distant plane limits, FOV). At the moment a nice add-on exists but it's not very interactive and relies on some workaround, especially for interface drawing.

Different setting for stereo visualization in the 3D viewport could be available (red-cyan and other anaglyph, interlaced, etc.)

Image viewer

Image viewer should provide options for viewing stereo pairs coming out of a stereo stereo render in blender, or from a composite setup containing a stereo node (more on that in the next paragraph). The usual stereo viz options should be provided.

Compositing workflow

The compositor should provide a stereo pair input node taking in image L and image R (if image have different aspect ratio or resolution pick only one). Same goes for a stereo pair output/separate. If a camera is set as stereo, render layers should show that they are providing stereo pairs to the compositor (and there should be an option as well to allow compositing only with one channel, for specific/fast preview tasks).

Render settings

How is the render output handled? Specific settings visible for stereo pairs. You might want to export simply separate images, or you might want to do color encoding or interlacement right in Blender before the export. Those settings could be independent from the compositor output (or preview node) or be available in the form of a "color coding" node for the compositor.
