Multiselect

Issues

Currently Multiselect works like an extended vertex select, and as so is not really useful. It also produces unexpected behaviour:

“The difference is that Blender doesn't really see edges or faces in multi-select, it just sees verts. Until a few years ago, Blender only had vertex mode, even! The problem being that you can't do the same thing in multi-select mode that you can do in edge mode, in this example, because it doesn't see two selected edges, it sees four verts and treats whatever's between them as selected.”

In this solution Multiselect would be a fourth selection mode (Vertex/Edge/Face/Multiselect). When chosen the user would be able to select all types of elements. But the user in fact would be in only one element selection mode at a time. The currently used element selection mode would only be indicated in the way the mesh is displayed, not using the selection mode icons. The element selected first would define what element selection mode the user currently is in. If you will start your selection with an edge for example, you will only be able to select edges until you deselect everything, at which point you can select any element again.
