Google SoC

Render API

Aaron worked with Peter trying to get the plugins to be able to call the API functions, and Blender to be able to call a specific plug-in's callbacks. The latter was working. All of the menu set-up and plugin switching code was put in place, but code needs to be written in the pipeline to fetch the appropriate callbacks. Ton requested that all scene/object conversion run before doing much work on material/texture, and asked if by next week it would be possible to use the API to render something in Aqsis. Aaron said that as soon as he had the plug-in callbacks accessing the API functions and embedded into the pipeline, then all of the currently working API functions may be used to generate a RIB file for render via Aqsis. His target to get the plug-in callbacks working was July 25th and rendering a cube by July 27th.

Deep Shadow / Tiles

Joseph managed to "cleverly" combine transmittance sub-pixel functions properly, but is still getting some ugly and odd visual errors. Ton asked about the opacity functions discussed a few weeks ago, and Joseph said those had been added but are not quite working. He was encouraged to commit what he has so others could evaluate and help test.

Audio System Clean-up

Csaba was out-of-town last week so didn't get much work done. He fixed a bug in the copy code for the sequencer so SHIFT-D functions properly. Next step was working on scrubbing and sync with the timeline window, hopefully done in the next week.

Current Projects

Micropolygon Renderer

Alfredo de Greef described his "tiny dot creator" project, which at this point was a standalone program.

Ton asked about rendering speed, and Alfredo replied "reasonable": somewhere in between Pixie and Aqsis most of the time. The Z-Brush head took 67 seconds at a shading rate of 0.25.

The code will be committed to SVN so others can look at integrating into Blender.

Cloth Simulation

Daniel Genrich requested a branch for the cloth simulation. Ton asked Jens Ole Wund if cloth was ready for Blender integration, to which Jens replied no. It was decided that Daniel and Jens would discuss more and leave the decision for a future meeting.

please note: Ton asked if i can agree, and since i was not on track with cloth code, i could not. I did say 'last time i tried i could not compile' so, please don't get that confused with the quality of code in question. Just for the records. Jens

Particle System

Janne asked for feedback on his unified dynamics baking proposal [1]. Ton said if the proposal affects other developer's code, they should give feedback ("you have to keep poking people until you get the reviews :) ".

Image Browser

Andrea implemented sharing the thumbnails of images on file system with Gimp and Nautilus (Gnome file browser). It was tested so far on Windows and Ubuntu and needs some work still, but looks quite good. The format is supposedly shared by Gnome and KDE, as well as GIMP.

2.45 RC and Connexion Build

Proposal for experimental Connexion builds for Siggraph to be hosted on blenderbuilds and graphicall as first preference, otherwise a temp folder on Blender downloads site.
