Hi Aligorith!

  • (your question from IRC): How do I add a new sub-page that is linked to from my user-page?
You can make your link on your page like this then follow red link and fill it with your content. Hope that help. --Igor 09:57, 31 August 2006 (CEST)

Animation Stuff

Hi Aligorith,

I wanted to send you an email about animation. I talked to Ton about an issue I've had over the bug tracker and it was suggested that you might be the best person to ask about it.

I hit this bug when I was working on a short film, and tracking down what was going on took me six weeks on and off. The issue is that on a keyed object / armature, unkeyed values get reset to default when the scene is loaded or when you hit undo. If, for example, you've scaled an armature rig object down a lot, then started animating by only inserting pos / loc keys, everything will look fine until you reload the file. Then the rig explodes.

I hit this with the bird rig from Big Buck Bunny, which I was attempting to use in my film. I couldn't figure out what was going on, and I'm still not 100% sure if it was because the rig was a library linked file or not.

A secondary effect of this issue is that undo does not work on animated objects when you're not using autokey -- if you've moved an object six times without setting a key, then want to undo back a step, you lose all six moves. This is totally unlike every other 3D app out there, and makes animating very, very frustrating. Ton said it's because the undo system doesn't push the state of objects, but rather re-evaluates animated objects when you hit undo.

I figured since you're working on the Animato stuff this might fall under your purview. I'd like to chat with you about these issues and about what might need to be done. We're trying to integrate Blender as much as possible into our pipeline at work (so far I've even been able to weasel Blender into doing a 3D company logo animation), and if this issue can be solved we might be able to convince the boss to let us do some shorter animations completely from within Blender. I don't know how I'd like to move forward on fixing the issue -- that's part of what I'd like to chat with you about.

Anyway, I'm reachable at kattkieru at yahoo, or cwardlaw at marchentertainment dot com. Thanks! ~ Charles
