3Dconnexion Space Navigator

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Version Information

This wiki article was written using information compiled in early September 2011 on a Apple MacBook Pro 17" mid-2009 (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) running an official release version of Blender 2.59.2 i386 on OS X 10.6.8.

Requirements

The Space Navigator requires 3DxMacWare to be installed which can be downloaded from the 3Dconnexion website free of charge; it is approximately 25MB in size. Go to the driver page, select SpaceNavigator as product, Mac OS X as operating system, hit the search button and click either filename or the diskette image to start downloading.

The most recent official version is 3DxMacWare 1.6.3 released on 4 August 2011.

not seeing any downloads ?
Depending on your screen resolution and the size of your browser window, you might have to scroll down a little to see the search results with the download links..

Installation

The 3DxMacWare installer is not very different from any other software installation on Max OS X: After the download has completed, double-click the 3dxwaremacSE-v1_6_3.dmg disk image to mount it, then double-click the 'Install 3DxMacWare (SE).app' application icon inside the disk image to install. You'll need to enter your password. Once the installation is complete, the '3DxTrainingWizard' starts and interactively explains the six different kinds of movements any object can do in 3D space, how they correlate with movements of the hand on the space navigator and some more fundamental concepts and controller settings.

it lives...
If you hover the mouse over the images in the training wizard dialog windows, they move, which makes it a lot easier to understand the point they are trying to make.

There is no need to review any of this information in too much detail right now, you can restart the training wizard at any given time later on. Once the training wizard has finished, you'll need to restart your system, the last installer dialog has a button for that.
