EU 7th framework programme

The EU supports long term ICT (Information & Communication Technology) related projects, aimed at getting european universities, institutes and companies working together on research and development. In the past, the Blender Foundation has partnered in the EU consortium "Uni-Verse" for further development of (tools around) the Verse protocol.

This subsidy programme (aka FP7) has a long list of possible topics that can get funding. Below you can find an opportunity I would like to explore.

Blender proposal: Open Source 3D development support network

General target is to organize support for studios or institutes to get blender.org projects integrated in their research/development/production pipeline. Active relationships will be established with researchers/developers in countries from Africa, Asia and South America.

Possible actions could be:

  • development support (hotline!) This could include patch review, bugfixing.
  • development of training material for developers
  • training the trainers (in Netherlands)
  • translation of documentation
  • organize conferences or seminars worldwide
  • integration/cooperation projects with partners like Aqsis, Crystal Space, Gimp, ...

Also note that nearly everything can be funded, but:

  • Not research nor development itself
  • It has to be related to research/development (not to creating artwork)

This proposal is based on the following call:

EU Call: Horizontal support actions

Objective ICT-2007.9.1 (ICT-2007.9.2): International cooperation

Target outcome: Development-related ICT research exploitation and cooperation roadmaps

Quote
Specific International Collaboration Actions aimed at establishing development-related ICT research "cooperation roadmaps" identifying and federating initiatives at local, regional or global level. The actions should help network relevant research communities and may include the exploitation and adaptation of existing EU research results in these contexts. These actions will focus on specific issues faced by developing countries and will seek the direct involvement of organisations from these countries. The themes to be covered include:

Open Source Software with particular focus on Asia, Africa, Caribbean, Pacific and Latin America.

To promote interoperability and the emergence of global open standards and practices. The objective will be to concentrate on OSS-based tools, services or applications of high potential for societal impact and wide diffusion of ICTs and to address in particular issues such as security, dependability, quality of service, maintainability and affordability.

As example of activities that can get funded by the EU:

The specific support actions can be of different types covering different activities:

Monitoring and assessment activities, conferences, seminars, studies, expert groups, high level scientific awards and competitions, operational support and dissemination, information and communication activities, support for transnational

access to research infrastructures or preparatory technical work, including feasibility studies, for the development of new infrastructures, support for cooperation with other European research schemes, the use by the Commission of external experts, management or a combination of these.
