Member Types and their Roles

Active members of the Blender Foundation-Education team include:

  • Moderator
  • Certification Review Board
  • Certified Trainers

Their roles and responsibilities are described below.

Moderator

The Moderator has the duty to plan, organize, motivate, evaluate and control the educational aspects of the Blender team. Specifically, they need to:

  • maintain the education-related content of the www.blender.org website to keep it attractive, well worded, and promoted
  • manage the Blender Certified Trainers program
  • moderate the #blendercert channel
  • issue and maintain Certificates to BFCT
  • collect annual BFCT dues
  • establish and manage programs as necessary to meet the training and educational needs of the Blender user community

In order to manage the BFCT program, the moderator must:

  • promote awareness of the program and its benefits to the general community
  • answer questions regarding qualifications and the process needed to join
  • receive and review applications, selecting appropriate board members to evaluate the application
  • welcome new members to the program and issue personal certificates
  • ensure dues are paid
  • work with the community of BFCT's to refine the program and increase the benefits of the program

The current Moderator is Roger Wickes (PapaSmurf).

Certification Review Board

This board shall be comprised of no less than 6 exceptionally-qualified individuals who are tasked with the responsibility to operate the BFCT program. They shall, on an as-needed basis:

  • establish objective criteria for acceptance
  • review and vote on the acceptance of applications for BFCT status
  • make suggestions for improvement to the BFCT program itself
  • actively promote the program and encourage qualified peers to apply

Criteria will focus on two things: the ability to teach, and the ability to use Blender at a practical level. Specific criteria may include, among other things:

  • ability to communicate clearly and articulate difficult and complex concepts
  • ability to listen and comprehend the issues facing the learner
  • knowledge of how Blender is used in everyday tasks
  • knowledge of how Blender is used in a workflow, or series of tasks
  • knowledge of how Blender is applied to various problem domains, such as Gaming, Architecture, Engineering, and Film

The application may require the applicant to submit examples of work performed using Blender, and demonstrate the ability to teach to a broad audience of learners.

Blender Foundation Certified Trainers

A BFCT is responsible for educating the nearly two million users of Blender around the world. This rather daunting task includes the responsibility to:

  • act as an advocate for Blender
  • answer user's questions posted on forums
  • sponsor and conduct workshops and presentations at local venues
  • conduct classes in learning Blender
  • publish learning material (books, manuals, and courseware)
  • publish material for point-learning, covering a specific task or feature, in the form of written and/or video tutorials and how-to's
  • contribute to the knowledge base of Blender
  • confirm issues and bugs related to the use of the program, as needed
  • suggest enhancements to Blender which improve usability and/or add features to the program
  • make suggestions for improvement to the BFCT program itself, and actively promote the program within their ranks, encouraging qualified peers to join
  • pay the annual due to the Blender Foundation

As such, the BFCT has the opportunity, but not the obligation, to earn money doing any of the above. Any revenue earned is considered income to the BFCT as an individual or company they are acting through, and will not be taxed or levied upon by the Blender Foundation. The BFCT will not be considered an employee, distributor, or contractor to the Blender Foundation. The Blender Foundation will not set rates or negotiate terms or business on behalf of the BFCT. For any action taken by the Blender Foundation that directly or indirectly benefits the BFCT, the BFCT agrees to fully indemnify and hold harmless the Blender Foundation from any acts or omissions arising from that action.

Blender Foundation Certified Trainer Program

The BFCT Program is a mechanism to ensure that a consistent level of knowledge is promulgated with every Blender class that is delivered. The program is administered by the Moderator, and certification is voted on by a BFCT board. The Moderator is responsible for maintaining an adequate number of board members to respond to submissions.
