For people interested in improving this: this document was originally done in InDesign, but I exported it to svg. It looks allright to me in Inkscape, just the text is cut up in hundreds of pieces, so that needs fixing to be able to use it for redistribution. Furthermore, the headers are embedded JPG's, I suggest they should be converted to JPG...
I think a more compatible format (than InDesign) is a must, so please feel free to help!

Scribus port
Okay so as Ewout requested I finished the Scribus port for him of the InDesign document. It's mostly the same. Be sure to read the Editor Readme file before editing/translating.
QuickStart 2.41 Scribus English
Apart from the regular linux releases, scribus is available for Windows and Mac OSX too!
*I've only extensively used it in Linux, so I cannot tell about Windows, and I do not have access to the Mac version. I have tested it only very slightly (> 1 hour) on Windows and got only mitigated results, but I might be slightly biased.

Additional Notes on the Scribus port
I forgot to add that this version of the document was produced on Scribus 1.3.3CVS from February 14th. I cannot ensure that it will look the same on previous versions of the software. I suggest you get the latest CVS version available from either SourceForge or Scribus.net, their versions are pretty much as stable or more stable than 1.3.2 and contain A LOT of bugfixes.

Important Notice Regarding Current (7.0.5) Adobe Viewer and PDF 1.4 & 1.5
I was informed today after much struggle that the Acrobat PDF Viewer for Linux and (maybe!) the Windows version have problems viewing documents with embeded images. Basically the color managements goes nuts and displays everything in a totally incorrect way.
We have 2 options right now: 1. We can stick to PDF 1.3, but it does not support transparency on images (or at all, I am not sure). So that poses some workflow problems depending on what we're doing...
2. We can still use PDF 1.4 and 1.5, and it will display correctly in Adobe PDF Viewer 5, 6, 7Mac, KGhostView, etc...
I'm still not sure how to deal with that... all I can say is a big f... y.. to Adobe for being so supportive.

Translation of Quickstart Guide
Swedish
I've begun translation on this guide to swedish.
A first draft: QuickStart 2.41 Scribus Swedish

Just a note about the English version:
ctrl-numpad 0 changes camera to be active rather than just numpad 0. numpad 0 just changes the 3D viewport to look from the active camera.

Polish
I've just started translation of this guide into Polish and will publish it in a day.

Update to 2.42
I did the corrections suggested in Errata and added a bunch of my own. The Scribus version of the quickstart can be found at QuickStart 2.42 Scribus English. The only issue I couldn't fix was the header. It is still 2.41.
