Wiki Tasks structure

Just a small suggestion. The whole "Release Notes/Manual...." content doesn't really belong into the release notes at all. It's information solely meant for wiki-editors.

I propose a single place (Wiki Tasks) as starting point for every wiki-editor and as a common TODO-list overview.

And following up to that I suggest we move all "Release Notes/Manual...." page to the following locations:

Looks good, the only suggestion I have left is that we might want to use a "/" between "Manual" and the version number ... this way the parent-page (in this case "Manual" is directly linked to on top of the sub-pages. (Since this isn't the manual itself we don't need to keep page-depth extremely small.) I dunno how to integrate different languages yet though. Maybe like this: "Wiki Tasks/Manual/version/XX" or by "Wiki Tasks/Manual/versionXX" (XX being the language code)... any suggestion? --Hoehrer 09:41, 11 January 2007 (CET)

I think such an announcement would be a good idea ... but i'm not really using the mailing list (which one do you mean btw?) I would love if s/b would drop of a short message that we started a Task-list for the wiki. Sorry for being inaccurate. I meant the docboard list found at http://projects.blender.org/mailman/listinfo/bf-docboard . Perhaps even BlenderNation could be used to inform people about this project at some point. I am certain there are people willing to contribute as there's a well defined task list. How to use the tasks list?

Im one of the people dragged from blendernation, i just happened to stumble on this page from the recent changes link. Its unclear to me how things are meant to be done, there doesnt appear to be a bledner wiki help page. Is there a guide to updating the blender wiki located somerwhere so all us newcomers know what we should be doing. I've made some changes to the manual-layers but not sure if i should be or if ive done it correctly. Sorry to spam here if this is not the right place for this, but i dont know where i should be asking these kinda questions. --Hazza 18:22, 19 January 2007 (CET)

Hey no problem with writing here. Aside from the instructions in the blendernation entry ... A basic guideline is already written in Wiki Tasks/Manual and I've also written a nice summary of what to do here. To quote myself: "If it is a red TODO entry it means one of 3 things: Either there needs to be new content (new features that needs documentation), the existing documentation needs updates or the third case (mostly in "Wiki Tasks/Manual"): Are these pages already updated? Please check & sync with the todo list."

I came across this User:Rpgsimmaster/Help that has been started on , this kinda help page would be very usefull. Looking at the wiki tasks page it shows 2.43 and 2.42 still requiring things to do, are the 2.42 changes not required now because changes need to be made to bring into line with 2.43 or is there a manual for each version.If i go into the manual and find somehwere that i feel i could add some info ect ,can i just go ahead and change it or do i have to ask permission somewhere ,is there someone in overal charge of the direction the blender wiki is heading. When i made changes to the manual-layers it showed an earlier version so i changed it to 2.43 ,was that the right thing to do. Examples and tuorials it ask that we dont add any unless it has been discussed on the talk-page or forum (where is this place to discuss it).

Ok, I'll try to say this as easy as possible: Everything that Blender can and that isn't documented in the wiki should be documented. This is especially true for new features that where added in a new release.

The task list is meant as a little helper to show people where to look what might be missing or outdated. If you see an open todo-entry just check what has been added in this release and if it is documented in the manual. Everything is requried if it hasn't been done yet.

"Going ahead and adding": Right now there is no one in charge over the whole wiki (but i might be wrong). I believe the general rule is if you don't mess up existing information and just add your own it will be fine as long as this new stuff fints into the section fine (and doesn't replicated another site that is already there). If you change the content (not the formatting) a whole site i would advise you to add this change in the sandbox (or on one of your user sub-pages) and show it to someone first (announce it in the forum).

Changing version: If everythign on the page youa re talkign about is true in 2.43 i see no problem with that.

Examples&tutorials: That place would be here on this page or the documentation forum.

I hope i didn't miss something.

EDIT: Oh and I'm always talking about Wiki Tasks ... i don't use the Wiki Tasks/Manual242 and Wiki Tasks/Manual243 pages much myself, they are more like 'checklsuits' than todo-lists.

When to start updating

Instead of using the first RC as the starting event for the manual-update I think it would be better to wait for code freeze in cvs. (What this really means is, no more features are getting included and the developer are entering the Bug Fixing state.) Similar to the one announced at blendernation recently.

  • Personally I think text descriptions can be started immediately for most things. It is screen shots that it is more often important to wait for since button shuffling and minor additions can happen fairly late. The freeze stage generally is fairly short which means a ton of writing would need to take place in a short time in order for the 'ideal' of the manual being ready when the release is (obviously that will pretty much never be the case :) but it does seem like the gap gets narrower each release ).
